Hokies men’s basketball announced its 2024-25 non-conference slate on July 18, though the women’s basketball program has yet to release its out-of-conference schedule.
However, Tech Sideline has obtained contracts for Virginia Tech men’s and women’s basketball’s non-conference games for the 2024-25 season. We’ll analyze some information from documents, provide some insight into Tech’s financials on that front, discuss the scheduling model and break down the yet-to-be-revealed women’s slate.
Men’s Basketball: Neutral-Site Games The New Norm
We’ll start on the men’s side, where the Hokies play seven of their 11 non-conference games in Cassell Coliseum. The “marquee” home game is Vanderbilt in the ACC/SEC Challenge on Dec. 4, a squad that features former JMU coach Mark Byington in his first season and two Tech transfers in MJ Collins and Tyler Nickel.
The other four big games are at neutral locations: Penn State in Baltimore (Nov. 15), the Fort Myers (Fla.) Tip-Off vs. Michigan and South Carolina/Xavier (Nov. 25-27) and Saint Joseph’s in Philadelphia (Dec. 21). While that’s at a neutral location in Philly, it’s essentially a road game, just six miles south of the Hawks’ campus.
