Two weeks into preseason camp, Virginia Tech switched up its practice routine, moving its operation down Beamer Way and over to the field at the Marching Virginians Center south of Lane Stadium on Wednesday.
The change was made to take advantage of the FieldTurf in the summer heat, mimicking the conditions the Hokies likely will face in their midday opener against Vanderbilt on Aug. 31.
“I think the guys, once they got up there, there was a little bit extra excitement because [it was] something different,” head coach Brent Pry said.
Pry said the temperature was about 9-10 degrees warmer than it’s been in the Hokies’ typical practice setup, either on the grass fields on the north side of Lane Stadium or in the indoor practice facility, which has FieldTurf but is obviously shaded.
