On July 27, just over halfway through Virginia Tech’s Hokie Fest cookout for recruits, Independence (NC) 2026 linebacker Dallas Brannon’s stomach felt a bit queasy.

Brannon had just eaten the majority of a cherry pie during an organized pie-eating contest as part of the event. He had agreed to participate, to see who could eat the most pie in five minutes. Brannon placed third, but he paid for that place.

“People definitely said I should’ve eaten the apple pie,” he said. “I haven’t eaten anything besides cherry pie, so that’s my go-to. I placed third, but that did come with some pain. I almost coughed some pie up. I held it down. It was two big boys in front of me.”
