When asked which young players have stood out thus far, Virginia Tech football’s veterans gave similar answers during Tuesday’s media day. Multiple wide receivers were pointed out, as well as two young defenders, one of which has been in the program since January.

The specific question I asked the veterans: “Can you name me one young player on each side of the ball, who hasn’t seen the the field much yet, who you think has a chance to be very good?”

It’s no surprise that multiple wide receivers made the list. Fontel Mines has established a reputation as a good recruiter and developer of talent as he heads into his third year in Blacksburg. It was expected that Ayden Greene would be mentioned by many players, and several named him, but when I asked the question, I used the phrase “young players who haven’t see the field yet,” and Greene was on the field for over 200 snaps last season.

Still, a couple of players couldn’t help but mention him.
