Emotions ran hot and tempers flared during Virginia Tech’s third preseason practice Friday, with defensive end Keyshawn Burgos getting tossed after taking a swing at right tackle Parker Clements during an intense inside run drill.

The Hokies haven’t even donned full pads yet — Friday was a workout in shells with just shoulder pads — but things ramped up pretty good, mirroring an ejection situation last year with Johnny Dickson.

“I love the intensity,” head coach Brent Pry said afterward. “The first two days, you’re just in helmets. And the O-line’s over here doing things, the D-line … And they just can’t wait to get together and go after each other. So that’s why we make it a five-minute period instead of nine or 10. You’re going to get some good pops. You’re going to go after each other and go on to the next one.”

That said, Pry used the after-the-whistle tussle as a teaching moment. The Hokies had ACC officials on site for the workout, and they would have ejected Burgos from a game for his actions, so Pry followed suit, sending the defensive end to the locker room for the rest of practice.
