Last meeting

Virginia Tech at last proved it could win on the road, going up to Chestnut Hill and throttling Boston College 48-22 last November. The Hokies ran for 361 yards and led 38-7 midway through the third quarter. Kyron Drones did it all, throwing for 219 yards and two touchdowns and spearheading Tech’s relentless rushing attack with 135 yards on 20 carries. Bhayshul Tuten scored three rushing touchdowns and the Hokies’ defense limited Eagles quarterback Thomas Castellanos to just 156 total yards.

The big picture

After four seasons, none of which included more than six regular-season wins, Jeff Hafley left Boston College for a defensive coordinator opportunity with the Green Bay Packers. In turn, the Eagles plucked O’Brien, formerly of the Patriots and coming off a couple-week stretch as Ohio State’s new OC, showing that beauty — and which is considered the better job, college head coach or NFL coordinator — is often in the eye of the beholder.
