Last meeting

Kyle Monangai ran for 143 yards and three touchdowns as Rutgers took advantage of Virginia Tech turnovers to pull away for a 35-16 home win last season, ending a 12-game losing streak in the series. Making his first start, Kyron Drones fumbled on the second snap of the game, setting up a Monangai touchdown run. Tech pulled back within 21-16 in the fourth quarter but Monangai reeled off touchdown runs of 55 and 12 yards to give Rutgers breathing room, handing the Hokies their 10th straight loss against non-conference Power 5 opponents, a streak that dates back to 2017.

The big picture

Rutgers turned a corner in Schiano’s second stint with the school, earning bowl eligibility by reaching six wins for the first time since he came back (the 2021 bowl was with a 5-7 mark as a replacement team during COVID) and capping things off with the program’s first bowl win since 2014.
