Scouting Report: Kaleb Spencer

Miami transfer Kaleb Spencer has taken the Hokies’ last open scholarship spot. A versatile player in high school, he at one point was committed to the Sooners, though he ended up with the Hurricanes. Spencer didn’t get many defensive snaps in his one college season, so we’ll lean on his high school video.

Spencer finished his playing days at Life Christian Academy where he was a do-everything player. At 6’2, 200, he can conceivably still fit into different spots on the defense. The Hokie coaches have stated they’re looking for a nickel to help settle the position, and fans want somebody to take the job and own it, but I don’t think Spencer’s the guy.

In the same game on defense, you could find Spence aligned like an inside linebacker, outside linebacker, or a low-to-high safety. It takes a good player to pull that off. LCA plays tough opponents up and down the east coast, and Spencer always looked like he belonged on the field against some nasty offenses.
