The First Bank & Trust Friday Q&A: Spring Practice And The Offensive Line

Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech will hold an open practice on Saturday. (Ivan Morozov)

1) What should we watch for in the Spring Game? Although usually “vanilla” in scripting, would there be any new clues to look for with the new players and new coaches? This could be formations, personnel group(ing), RPO plays, etc. – 85vthokie_cincy

Chris Coleman: We’ve got a few weeks until the Spring Game, but with there being an open practice in Lane Stadium on Saturday that some fans may attend (11:45 a.m.), I figured I’d go ahead and tackle this one now.

I don’t think I’d pay much attention to things like formations, how much read option a team runs or stuff like that. Even if they do run the read option (and there will certainly be some of it), the orange/yellow jersey will be on the quarterback, so you won’t be able to get a clear view of how effective the Hokies will be when running that particular type of play.

Even the blocking scheme didn’t stay the same at all times after the spring game last year. Check out this passage from a recent Brandon Patterson article…
