1) Which spring sports team for Virginia Tech has the deepest run in the ACC/NCAA tourneys? Baseball, softball, wrestling, or T&F? – BackInTheBurg

Chris Coleman: I’m not knowledgeable enough about track to give a good answer, so I’ll stick to baseball, softball and wrestling. I think the most likely of those three to make a very deep run in the postseason is softball. However, I think the most likely of those three to win a National Championship is baseball.

Going back to 2011, here are the most recent NCAA wrestling champions: Penn State, Iowa, Penn State, Penn State, Penn State, Penn State, Ohio State, Penn State, Penn State, Penn State and Penn State. Before that, Iowa won it three years in a row, and before that Minnesota. You’ve got to go all the way back to Oklahoma State and 2006 to find a team outside the Big Ten that has won a national title. And before Oklahoma State, it was Minnesota and Iowa combining to win it for eight years in a row…two more Big Ten teams.

In short, wrestling has always been dominated by the Big Ten, and that’s been true very recently too. Wrestling is huge in that part of the country and benefits those schools and their big, fat TV contracts has only served to strengthen their chokehold on the sport. Virginia Tech is one of the best wrestling programs in the country, and Tony Robie is an outstanding coach, but the Big Ten’s dominance is entrenched, and it will only grow as the revenue gulf increases.
