The 2022 Virginia Tech football season is over. Now it’s time to look ahead to the offseason. The first task at hand for head coach Brent Pry is roster management. Not only must he close out the 2022 recruiting class, but he also must figure out which of his current players are returning and which are not, so that he and the coaching staff have a better idea of what to do in the transfer portal.

This week we’re going to focus on roster management. This article will be a general, overall piece on Virginia Tech’s scholarship numbers, and we’ll follow that up later in the week with closer looks at both the offense and the defense.

One thing I want to point out is that the HokieSports.com roster can’t be trusted when attempting to determine how much eligibility a player has remaining. 2020 didn’t count in terms of eligibility, yet HokieSports.com acts as if it did.

For example, they listed Dorian Strong as a junior in 2022. Since 2020 didn’t count, listing him as a true sophomore in 2022 would have been a more accurate reflection of his status. He got hurt in 2022, which will count as a redshirt year for him, so he’ll have three years of eligibility remaining going forward. HokieSports.com will most likely list him as a redshirt junior next season, but for all practical purposes, he’ll be a redshirt sophomore.
