2022-23 Virginia Tech Basketball Preseason Preview: ACC Opponents A-M

What do Virginia Tech basketball’s ACC opponents look like this season? (Jon Fleming)

With less than a week until the college basketball season tips off, let’s dive into Virginia Tech basketball’s opponents around the ACC.

Chris Coleman will have a column on the non-conference schedule on Thursday. Meanwhile, I’ll breakdown the league on Tuesday (A-M; Boston College-Miami) and Wednesday (N-Z; North Carolina-Wake Forest). The series turned out well last year

The Hokies open their season on Monday, Nov. 7 in Cassell Coliseum vs. Delaware State. It’s a 9 p.m. ET tip on ACC Network Extra, and it follows the women’s basketball game at 5 p.m. vs. Mount St. Mary’s.

For this preview, we’ll go through the ACC schools in alphabetical order and hit on a number of things:

  • Number of “returning starters” for each program – players that recorded 10-plus starts at that school last season.
  • Last season’s record and finish for each school, this year’s predicted order of finish, and where they rank in KenPom ahead of 2022-23.
  • Meeting details: how many times the Hokies saw each team in 2021-22 and how many times Tech will see them this year.
  • Ranking each individual game on a scale of 1-3: 1 is a “should win” game, 2 is a toss-up and 3 is a “difficult task.”

Boston College

Returning starters: 5

2021-22 record and ACC finish: 13-20 (6-14); T-11th

2022-23 projection: Media (ACC): 13; KenPom (D-1): 74

Meeting details: 1 in 2021-22; 2 in 2022-23. Wednesday, Dec. 21 away (6:30 p.m., ACCN), Wednesday, Feb. 8 at home (7 p.m., ACCN).

Difficulty: 2

Synopsis: In year one under Earl Grant, Boston College was young and unproven. In 2022-23, the Eagles return five players with starting experience; only UVa has more (six). Makai Ashton-Langford, DeMarr Langford, Jaeden Zackery, T.J. Bickerstaff and Quinten Post are all back. Hokie fans will be delighted to know James Karnik, who had 26 points (10-of-12) and nine rebounds in last year’s meeting in Boston, is gone. But this is a group that ended the season on a high, outing Pitt and Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament before falling to Miami (who reached the Sweet 16) in overtime in the quarterfinals.
