Pitt Study: Excellent Defense, But Problems On The OL

The Pitt Panthers are coming up, and they have two losses so far this season: Tennessee and Georgia Tech. I always write my previews with the idea that they’re blueprints on how to beat that week’s opponent. Unfortunately, as we’ll see, there aren’t a lot of parallels to be drawn from Pitt’s tough loss to Tennessee and their baffling collapse against Georgia Tech.

Tennessee traded blows and won on talent, while the game against GT was more of a loss by the Panthers than it was a win by the Yellow Jackets. The Panthers had a makeshift offensive line, a talented second-string back who fumbled all over the place, a quarterback who didn’t figure out his grip issues until late in the game, piles of penalties, and one player who not only dropped three interceptions, but dropped three interceptions where one was a definite pick-six and the other would’ve ended a field goal drive.

I think there are a few things the Hokies might hope to crack, though, and some areas they definitely need to be prepared for.

The Pitt Offense

The Panthers have a new coordinator and new quarterback, but there’s still a heavy pro-style influence in the scheme. Their bread-and-butter is a mix of Inside and Outside-Zone; here’s Outside Zone from the pistol with the somewhat rare crack block:
