Penalties, Inadequate Run Blocking The Themes (Again) For Virginia Tech In West Virginia Loss

Virginia Tech
WVU fans had too much to celebrate against Virginia Tech on Thursday night. (Ivan Morozov)

Normally when Virginia Tech loses a football game, I go to sleep at night with certain thoughts, many of them negative, much like everyone else. After sleeping on it and watching a little bit or all of the game the next day, I’ve calmed down and I feel better. That’s not the case today, though. I feel exactly the same as I did at the conclusion of last night’s game, which is pretty darn low.

I picked West Virginia to win the football game, so I’m not surprised by the loss. In fact, I picked WVU to score 27 points, and the offense scored 26 (I don’t forecast defensive or special teams scores). However, I was surprised by how they thoroughly thrashed the Hokies. Sure, there were a few plays here and there that could have helped make the game closer, but here is why the Mountaineers won the football game…

WVU rushing: 46 carries, 218 yards, 4.7 ypc
VT rushing: 18 carries, 35 yards, 1.9 ypc

However, West Virginia thumped Virginia Tech at the line of scrimmage and earned the victory. Everything else was just semantics. It could have been closer. Yes, I suppose Tech even could have won with more discipline. However, even if Tech had managed to win, I would have felt like it was a stolen victory. That’s how thoroughly outplayed the Hokies were at the line of scrimmage.
