Today, Washington-Liberty (Va.) defensive tackle Elijah Hughes is headed to the beach for a vacation with his family. It’s a quick getaway and one he’s taking before the grind of his senior football season begins.

After the trip, Hughes will jump right back into his recruiting, then football practice. He’s already been participating in workouts with his teammates, but this week Hughes also received a surprise scholarship offer which has also made him re-evaluate his current options.

On Friday, Hughes will be at Virginia Tech for a barbecue with other recruits. He’ll also be in attendance for the Hokies’ prospect camp the following day, in part to see his brothers. Hughes’ younger brother will be a high school sophomore, while his older brother will be a sophomore in college this fall.

“I love Virginia Tech,” Hughes said. “They offered me early, and they’ve been recruiting me hard ever since. My older brother goes to school there, and I really like what they’ve got going on over there.”

Hughes said he also is looking forward to reconnecting with assistant coach JC Price, his primary recruiter, as well as Kory Rush, one of the Hokies’ graduate assistants.

“We keep in great touch, and they’ve been very helpful,” Hughes said. “If I ever have any questions, they’ll give me a straight-forward, honest answer, and I appreciate that about them. They’ve just been awesome.”

Miami offered Hughes a scholarship on Monday. He said his only contact with the program prior to that was when Hurricanes coaches followed him on social media last week, which sparked conversation with them. Hughes said his head coach also spoke to the staff and the offer ensued.

“With Miami, it kind of fell out of the sky,” Hughes said. “Right now, I’d say I didn’t know a whole lot before, and I’m doing my research.

“I’ve driven through (the area) and we stopped because of cousins living over there. My grandparents are in Fort Meyers, so we’ve been in South Florida many times. We usually go for Christmas every year. I know they have great talent, and it’s a pretty nice location. I’ve heard good things about Coach (Mario) Cristobal.”

Hughes said he’s also stayed in regular contact with the coaches at Stanford. He camped there, then officially visited the Cardinal last month. Hughes also has family in west-central California.

“I think Stanford is great,” he said. “They’re definitely one of the top schools I’m looking at. I’m in contact with Coach (Diron) Reynolds and everything. I really like
