An announcement is just a couple of weeks away for Powdersville (SC) three-star cornerback Thomas Williams, who is fresh of an official visit to Virginia Tech. He has set July 4 as the date he’ll publicly announce a commitment. Aside from the Hokies, he said he’s also choosing from a top list that includes Penn State, East Carolina and Liberty.

“It’s really going to come down to the coaching staff, who’s been recruiting me the hardest,” Williams said. “Then, who I feel like, in the position I play, who’s going to make me a better man and a player.”

Williams officially visited the Hokies this past weekend, his third trip to Blacksburg. He also visited for a spring practice in March and last summer with the previous coaching staff. But his most recent stop gave Williams the best overall feel for the program and school.

“The visit was good, and I was able to see if I could get a feel for the environment,” he said. “I already had a feel about the coaches, since some were at Penn State. It was a lot of positive energy. I was able to go to downtown Blacksburg, which is right beside the school. Just so much positive energy.”

Assistant coach Derek Jones has been the lead recruiter for Virginia Tech, but coach Brent Pry and chief of staff Michael Hazel have also factored in.

“The relationship with Coach Jones and Coach Pry, it was more of a father-son relationship,” Williams said. “With Hazel, it’s more like a best friend type. He checks on me like every other day. Me and Coach Jones, we talked about, every time they had a team meeting, he said they don’t talk football, they talk about how to be better in life. They start off with five things that they struggled with, and throughout the week they try to get better at it.”

Overall, from his visits and rapport with the coaches, Williams said he has a good feel for the Hokies.

“I could tell they were family, that it’s a family vibe,” he said. “I like the coaching staff, how with Coach Jones, how he has a relationship with the players, more than a coach. He’s just so much more than a coach.”

Williams said he doesn’t think he’ll take another official visit before his announcement, but he said he’s also considering East Carolina, Liberty and Penn State.

“Penn State, I like the environment,” Williams said. “Liberty, I like their staff and how the facilities and everything was set up. ECU, I like that staff and my position coach especially, Coach (Chris) Foster. We just clicked.”
