The Virginia Tech Friday Q&A: Basketball, And Player Development At The Grassroots Level

Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech seemed to run at a fast tempo with Justin Robinson…but did they? (Jon Fleming)

1) Mike Young plays slow tempo on purpose because he has to (KP adjusted tempo #334) with the athletes we recruit. Villanova actually plays slower (#353 which is very rare for a top team), but Jay Wright does it by choice and not because of the athletes he brings in as most are top-100 kids who can play any style. I believe CMY’s slow tempo style makes it even more challenging to consistently bring in top-100 style athletes who want to play a faster tempo like the NBA does as they prepare for the next level. How much does our slow play style hurt us as we seek out top-100 kids each year? – catdaddy

Chris Coleman: During the 2018-19 season, Virginia Tech and Wofford both had historic seasons. The Hokies made the Sweet 16, while the Terriers were just a shot away from doing the same. Both teams were known as excellent offensive basketball teams who could dictate to the opposition.

It might surprise you that Virginia Tech’s adjusted tempo per Ken Pomeroy in 2018-19 was actually slower than Wofford’s.

2018-19 VT Tempo: No. 334
2018-19 Wofford Tempo: No. 278
