The Hokies are back in the win column. I’ve been thinking about this win and trying to figure out what was different about it, and what to say about it and how to apply it to the larger issues that we’ve started to talk about recently.

Last week, I said that I have given up on this staff. I’m just not convinced they have what it takes to get the most out of Virginia Tech’s potential in football. I don’t think the Hokies are a sleeping giant capable of making the College Football Playoffs. I’m a guy who just wants to compete for the Coastal Division championship and see what happens after that. And I have lost my faith in this staff to do that consistently, or maybe at all.

But I do admire the way the players and by extension the coaches continue to fight and scrap. This team isn’t completely incompetent. If they hang in there and play hard, along the way good things will happen and some games will be won. In this game, they played hard, stepped up and made some plays, and benefitted from their opponent shooting itself in the foot several times.

It added up to a win that quiets most of the venom for the time being. You can’t eliminate all of it, but it will be decreased in volume and frequency this
