The Virginia Tech Friday Q&A: Surprise Players, Strength & Conditioning, And More

Christian Darrisaw Virginia Tech
Christian Darrisaw was a huge development success story for Virginia Tech (Jon Fleming)

1) We have been questioning development for a while now and development encompasses a lot of areas. Overall, what players would you consider development successes during Justin Fuente’s tenure? – 2hhoop3

Chris Coleman: I would certainly say that a good number of cornerbacks developed, particularly Caleb Farley.  You can also use current starting cornerback Jermaine Waller as an example.  As a true freshman in 2018, he was only on the field for 127 snaps.  He couldn’t beat out true sophomore Bryce Watts, who was not a Power 5 level football player in my opinion.  Then Waller blew up as a sophomore in 2019, and he’s been good again in 2021 despite suffering several injuries throughout his career.  He has developed.

Christian Darrisaw obviously developed into a first round pick.  Lecitus Smith has developed.  Luke Tenuta developed early in his career, though he’s taken a step back this year.  Dalton Keene developed, James Mitchell developed, while TyJuan Garbutt and Divine Deablo are also guys who you can say developed a good deal during the course of their careers.  Emmanuel Belmar also developed a lot throughout the Justin Fuente tenure.

Going back a little further, Greg Stroman took his biggest steps under Justin Fuente’s staff, and so did Cam Phillips.  Still, those players did spent half of their careers under the previous staff, so the credit deserves to be split.  I’ll also throw Drake DeIuliis  into the mix as a guy who has made big strides since the beginning of his career (as most tight ends have under Shibest).
