1) What are the coaching responsibilities for player development? i.e. – Position coaches vs coordinators vs. head coach. – vtbball80

Chris Coleman: Coordinators are really only involved in on-field player development with their own specific positions.  During individual drills, Brad Cornelsen is with his quarterbacks, and Justin Hamilton is with his safeties.  They have little to do with the player development of the other positions.  When it comes to the skills development of the individual players – such as route running by wide receivers, the footwork of the quarterback, or the hand placement of offensive linemen – that is 100% on the position coaches.

However, there’s a lot more to player development than simply teaching technique.  Player development is a year-round thing, and it involves the head football coach, strength staff and other key athletic department personnel.  It’s the head football coach who has the vision and creates the structure, assuming he’s provided enough support from the athletic director.  Here are some key factors of player development that are just as important, or even more important, than on-field coaching…

Strength and conditioning: This is a physical sport, and players need the required strength to play at their highest levels.
