West Virginia Scouting Report: Talented Receivers, And A Stunting Defense

Virginia Tech
The Black Diamond Trophy will be on the line when Virginia Tech and West Virginia meet this Saturday. (Ivan Morozov)

West Virginia opened their season with a loss to Maryland in a game that was sloppy for both teams. WVU hocked up four turnovers in the game, and looked utterly befuddled against certain plays. The next week they blew out Long Island University, which only moved up to FCS a few years ago. I’ll be honest, I didn’t watch much of the LIU game. Maryland’s the focus this week.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Watching WVU, the thing that really jumped out was the return game. WVU has been hot on returns the past two weeks, led by Winston Wright Jr. (WR, #1) and his fast feet:

He didn’t hit the endzone on either of these, but that was good speed and serious skill he showed. The cut on the second one is just stupid good. In addition to these two beauts against Maryland, he notched a TD against LIU. He’s been good for WVU, so these aren’t fluky. On the negative side, he fumbled the catch on a punt and lost the ball; I wouldn’t bet on him muffing another one, though my fingers are crossed regardless.
