In late May, St. Frances (MD) three-star cornerback Cam Johnson announced a top seven of Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Maryland, Penn State and Boston College. This summer he’s had a chance to see just three of those.
Johnson, Rivals.com’s No. 14-ranked player in Maryland for the 2022 class, still insists that top list is intact. But his lone official visit came June 4 to Virginia Tech, and while he’s not at a point to make a decision, he’s eyeing one this fall.
“I’m getting a feel,” Johnson said. “I’m not so sure, but I’m getting a feel. I’m still not 100 percent sure, yet. It’s going to be either before or during the season. There’s not necessarily anything I need to see, it’s just a big decision. I haven’t set my mind on where I want to go yet.”
The trip to Blacksburg has been the lone time Johnson has seen Virginia Tech in-person, but it’s been more than enough to have the Hokies in a good position.
“It was nice, and it was the first time they had recruits on campus in a while,” Johnson said. “The staff was excited, everyone was excited, and it was just a great experience overall. I wasn’t necessarily surprised, but I liked how the team interacted with each other, bonded with each other and the coaches. It was just a cool vibe the whole weekend.”
Assistant coach Ryan Smith has been Johnson’s primary recruiter, and even since that visit, Johnson said they’ve established a good rapport.
