The Virginia Tech Friday Q&A: The JumpStart Program, Shoe Companies And Basketball Recruiting

1) How does what VT has announced about its NIL program for our student-athletes compare to what other schools are doing? Are we ahead of the curve or trying to play catch up? – UpperQuad

Chris Coleman: It’s so hard to tell by reading press releases exactly how good each school’s NIL program will be.  Alabama announced their program a month ago, and if you want to criticize Virginia Tech for inability to communicate, you’ve got to admit that Tech’s rollout of the JumpStart program was miles and miles ahead of the Tide’s announcement of their program, which is called The Advantage.  Alabama’s announcement consisted simply of a 5-paragraph press release, with one quote, and hardly any information.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech rolled out a massive press release dedicated to JumpStart, complete with a video, and went into much more detail than Alabama.  Does that mean Tech’s program will be better than Alabama’s?  I can’t make an educated guess, because the Tide didn’t include any detail in their announcement.
