Any decision is likely still months away, but on Sunday, Cedar Grove (Ga.) three-star defensive lineman Malachi Madison narrowed down the focus of his recruitment.
Madison announced via Instagram a top eight of Virginia Tech, Mississippi State, Minnesota, UCF, Pittsburgh, Iowa State, Liberty and Washington State. Internally, he might be a little further along, but Madison hopes getting his recruitment to this point will make his decision even more clear.
“Really, it’s me looking at what’s the best fit for me, who’s going to get me to the next level, what coaches I have the best relationship with,” he said. “I’m also going to be looking at everyone academically, that they have the program I want to do, which I’m leaning towards business management.”
Madison moved from Thomas Dale (Va.) to Georgia two years ago, but that familiarity with Virginia has helped keep the Hokies as a prime contender.
“I played part of my high school in Virginia and Virginia Tech was a big name,” Madison said. “They were looking at me in Virginia, but they were waiting after this season and since then, I’ve had a great relationship with multiple coaches. It’s a good program, a building program. The weightlifting is great, and the education is amazing. A lot of my friends would come to my games, and I have a good relationship with a lot of coaches over there.”
The Hokies have also taken more of a team approach in recruiting Madison, which he said he’s also liked. He’s identified especially with a couple of coaches, though.
