When you check out Virginia Tech’s online roster on HokieSports.com, you may notice that there are 17 wide receivers listed. However, a quicker inspection shows that only nine of them are scholarship players. It’s those nine players who we’ll focus on today.
Here’s a list of the scholarship players in order of seniority…
Changa Hodge (6-1, 207, Sr.)
Tre Turner (6-2, 187, Jr.)
Kaleb Smith (6-2, 221, r-So.)
Tayvion Robinson (5-10, 187, So.)
Jaden Payoute (6-1, 210, r-Fr.)
Dallan Wright (6-1, 179, Fr.)
Tyree Saunders (6-0, 196, Fr.)
Jaylen Jones (6-1, 203, Fr.)
Da’Wain Lofton (5-11, 179, Fr.)
Five of those nine players have never played wide receiver in a college football game, and one of those isn’t even participating at all this spring due to having a plate removed from his surgically repaired foot (Jaden Payoute). This is pretty normal for a spring in most seasons at pretty much all positions. There’s always plenty of inexperience, with generally one or two guys missing significant time with injuries.
