The recruitment of Leesville Road (NC) four-star defensive end Beau Atkinson has been affected like others, making any decision likely months away. But Atkinson has also tried to keep an optimistic view.
“(Virtual learning) almost seems normal now, which is weird to say,” he said. “A year ago, I thought I’d be going crazy. In some ways, it’s actually better. We’re one of only a couple of states playing, so more coaches are seeing us. Virtual learning, it seems like it’s easier in a lot of ways than in-person. There’s just so much more time to spend on weightlifting, practicing and being the best athletes we can be, as well as students.”
Atkinson, Rivals.com’s No. 15 weakside defensive end and No. 12 player in North Carolina for 2022, said he’s up to 11 scholarship offers, after Miami joined last week. But with his junior season three games old, he said he’s simply tried to keep tabs on his recruitment, rather than jump in.
“Mainly, I’ve just been trying to grind and focus on the high school season,” Atkinson said. “Then obviously, try to get to as many places as possible when things open in June. It’s pretty much the same three things: a place I can win at, a school with great academics and players and coaches around me that will help develop me into to the best I can be.”
Virginia Tech has been a fixture with Atkinson since it offered on May 9 of last year. But a recent coaching change has shaken up his relationship with the Hokies a bit.
