The Virginia Tech Offensive Scheme, Part 4

Now let’s zoom in on the Vice Squad. You can break down the Hokies’ blocking schemes into four main types. When the Hokies want to block particular men with favorable matchups, they use a “man” or “base” scheme in both the passing and running game. When they want their guys to block an area, they use “slide” protection or a “zone” running scheme. When they want to mix the two, they run “half-slide” blocking in the passing game and “zone-BOB” blocking in the running game. And when they want to bust open a lane on the edge of the tackle box, they run “gap” schemes when both passing and running. This being football, there are a billion different flavors of these four ideas, and if I were being technical, I’d say there a few more kinds of common protection, but this will work for us here.
