Virginia Tech Football Schedule Thoughts, and Some Basketball Nostalgia

Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech usually plays its best football early in the season under Justin Fuente. (Ivan Morozov)

I’m assuming that unlike last season, Virginia Tech’s original football schedule will not be changed in August due to COVID.  I’d like to think that society will have things ironed out to the point where football schedules won’t be changed this year, but if 2020 taught us anything it’s that making predictions about events several months down the road is absolute folly.  There’s always the possibility that things won’t go as planned, but this article is going to operate under the assumption that they will.

Top-Heavy Home Schedule Means Good Tailgating Weather (Knock On Wood)

This year’s football schedule is just about the oddest I’ve even seen.  For the first time since 1984, when I was all of one year old, the Hokies will play six of their first seven games in Lane Stadium.  As someone who enjoys tailgating, and as someone who hasn’t been able to tailgate since the year 2019, that’s where my mind immediately turns.

Here are Virginia Tech’s home football dates for the 2021 season, and the average temperature high for each day…

Sept. 2/3, UNC: 79 degrees
Sept. 11, MTSU: 76 degrees
Sept. 25, Richmond: 72 degrees
Oct. 9, Notre Dame: 67 degrees
Oct. 16, Pitt: 65 degrees
Oct. 23, Syracuse: 62 degrees
Nov. 13, Duke: 55 degrees
