Last Wednesday, the first day of the fall signing period, was a stressful one in a few ways for Carrollwood Day (Fla.) three-star defensive tackle Desmond Mamudi. In May, he committed to nearby South Florida, but on Wednesday, Mamudi flipped and signed with Virginia Tech.
That wasn’t the most stressful part, though.
On Sunday, Mamudi welcomed a baby brother, Zion, to his family. Mamudi’s mother was due on Wednesday and went into labor shortly after Mamudi signed his Letter of Intent. Now, with both his football future secure and his baby brother home, Mamudi said he’s ready for what lies ahead.
“On Signing Day, I was like, ‘I really hope she doesn’t have this baby on Signing Day because she won’t be there for me,’” Mamudi said. “When I signed, everyone was so excited. Then, she went to the hospital for a check-up and ended up actually going into labor.”
It’s the end of what’s been a whirlwind for Mamudi. The Hokies, the lone Power Five program to offer a scholarship, did so on Nov. 19. That was also the beginning of their courtship. Mamudi said within less than two hours, members of the coaching staff followed him on Twitter, reached out, communicated with him over phone, then offered the scholarship.
