Inside The Numbers: Ashby’s Improvement, Deablo’s Consistency, and Darrisaw’s Dominance

The Hokies have played six games in 2020, and more numbers are starting to come in.  This week we’ll look at Rayshard Ashby’s recent improvement, the consistency of Divine Deablo, and the dominance of Christian Darrisaw.

Rayshard Ashby Improving

The struggles of Rayshard Ashby have been well-documented on this website and in our podcasts.  He reported back too heavy, then he got COVID, so he was out of shape and poorly conditioned.  Not to mention the fact that, like everyone else, he never had a chance to learn the new defensive scheme in the spring.

Ashby was sub-par in the first two games of the season against NC State and Duke, and then he (along with many others) played the worst game of his career against North Carolina.  Since then, like the rest of the defense, he’s gotten better.

Let’s look at Ashby’s game-by-game grades for the season.  I want to focus on overall grade and run defense and not get bogged down by the details of tackling grade, coverage, and pass rushing.
