On the field, this game didn’t turn out at all like we expected. Off the field, the irate post-game reaction from Hokie fans was another thing I didn’t expect.

Just like that, Monday Thoughts is set up. I’ll talk about the game first, then relay my thoughts on the post-game reaction.

That Sound You Hear is Virginia Tech Shooting Itself in the Foot

Darned if things almost always even out. Last week, Boston College came in as one of the best teams in the nation in turnover margin and proceeded to treat the football like a bug that had accidentally flown into their mouth.

This week, Wake Forest came in as the No. 2 team in the nation in turnover margin … and left as the top-ranked team that’s actually played more than one game. Four Big Ten and Mountain West teams, who played their first games last weekend, are ranked ahead of the Deacs based on one game’s worth of stats. Wake would otherwise be No. 1 in the nation in turnover margin.

Last week, BC’s five turnovers and nine penalties skewed what was otherwise a pretty even game. This week, VT’s three turnovers and 11 penalties skewed what was otherwise a game that statistically favored the Hokies.
