Last week we looked at individual line play in the 2019 Buffalo Bills defense and batted around how their preferences compare to what we’re used to seeing from the Hokies. Now we’ll zoom out a bit and look at how the Bills aligned their defense. Here’s a still of the opening snap of the Texans game we’ve already looked at:

Virginia Tech

Though the Bills are a 4-3 scheme, that’s an almost classic example of 4-2-5 front, and not just because they’re in nickel personnel. Their defense is aligned closely to what you’ll find in many 4-2-5 schemes. Let’s go by usual football rules and call these alignments “techniques.” Here’s the Hokies’ technique system from the late 90s/early 2000s, for a guide:
