The virtual tours provided by universities and college football programs during the ongoing pandemic were nice, but for Gilman (Md.) three-star defensive end Mattheus Carroll, they weren’t as good as the real thing.

On Monday, Carroll released a top three of Virginia Tech, Maryland and Duke. One of the main things those three have in common is that he was able to visit each multiple times and first-hand, before the pandemic set in. Now, Carroll said he’s not in a huge rush, but working to narrow things down to the one he likes most.

“The quarantine communication has been big virtually, so it’s opened the door for me to see the schools I’ve never seen before, like Vandy, Louisville, South Carolina,” Carroll said. “They showed me things on the visits that I would never have seen. I also was just able to take a step back from actual visits and reflect on all the visits I’ve taken. That’s why I was able to move my recruitment as soon as I did. A lot of times, I’ve just been having conversations with my parents, which is good. One thing that’s hurt, like everyone else, is not being able to take my visits. My only hope at this point is taking officials sometime during the season, if that. It’s dangerous right now, but it is what it is. I’m just trying to stay afloat. I do feel confident with the visits I’ve taken with my top three.”
