Yesterday afternoon, Mt. Zion (Md.) three-star forward David N’Guessan announced his commitment to Virginia Tech. Sure, it would have been better under different circumstances, but the decision just couldn’t wait. He chose the Hokies over his other finalist, Saint Joseph’s. N’Guessan chose yesterday because of his mother’s birthday.

N’Guessan, who’s from The Netherlands, is practicing social distancing in Maryland. He broke the news to his mother, still in The Netherlands, by video chat.

“With everything going on, I couldn’t take any more visits,” N’Guessan said. “It was down to the last two schools. And yesterday was my mom’s birthday, so I was like, there’s no reason waiting. I already know where I want to go. And I could surprise my mom on her birthday. She didn’t know. She was just happy and excited for me.”
