1) VT’s athletic program in aggregate vs other 14 ACC schools…are we in the upper or lower half on the field/court/pitch/mat etc.? – Vippie1

Chris Coleman: The private schools don’t report their revenue, so from that standpoint it’s hard to get a good view of the situation.  However, let’s look at last year’s Directors Cup standings to get a feel for where the Hokies rank in the actual results against other ACC programs across all sports…

No. 6 UVA
No. 8 FSU
No. 12 Duke
No. 13 UNC
No. 16 Notre Dame
No. 23 NC State
No. 34 Wake Forest
No. 41 Louisville
No. 45 Virginia Tech
No. 53 Syracuse
No. 63 Miami
No. 71 Georgia Tech

Virginia Tech is in the middle, about where I expected them to be.  They’ve been in the 30s before, and finished as high as No. 28 in 2017-18, and they currently they sit No. 18, though that will drop after the spring.  How much it will drop, I don’t know.  But generally speaking, I think the Hokies are middle-of-the-pack in the ACC, and the numbers indicate that’s probably true.

I’ve told this story before, but I want to tell it again.  A one-time VT baseball assistant coach told a one-time TSL baseball writer about what it was like to recruit against teams like UVA, UNC, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, etc…teams with huge academic endowments.
