Justin Fuente’s Biggest Decision Yet

Virginia Tech will be hiring a new defensive coordinator soon.  With no game to prepare for this week, I’m finally able to put a few thoughts on paper with regards to the hiring process.

The Biggest Decision of Justin Fuente’s Career (So Far)

Like Frank Beamer’s hire of a new defensive coordinator between the 1992 and 1993 seasons, this upcoming hire could potentially determine the outcome of Justin Fuente’s tenure at Virginia Tech.

There are many differences between now and then, and some similarities as well.  Beamer had a career record of 24-40-2 after his first six years at the helm, and was coming off a 2-8-1 season.  Fuente has gone 33-19 and made four straight bowls.  Beamer took over a program on probation, and Fuente did not.  Fuente is also not on the hot seat as Frank was back after the 1992 season.

Still, Fuente’s hire is arguably just as important as Beamer’s was back after the 1992 season.  The wrong hire could eventually cost Fuente his job, just as the wrong hire probably would have cost Frank his back then.
