Inside the Numbers: “The Streak” In Perspective

Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech’s dominance in their rivalry with UVA is on hiatus. (Ivan Morozov)

Virginia Tech’s 15-year winning streak over in-state rival UVA was incredible.  I don’t just say that because it seems incredible.  I actually looked up the numbers for the top 25 rivalries in the country, according to Athlon Sports, and then used Winsipedia.com to gather information on the longest winning streaks in each rivalry.

Here’s the link to the nation’s top rivalries, according to Athlon. For what it’s worth, I didn’t include Harvard-Yale, and I almost didn’t include Georgia Tech-Georgia because of the money disparity of about $85 million in revenue.  Rivalries are best when they’re between schools with similar resources, and that’s not the case there.  Still, I included it to show that not even Georgia has been able to dominate the Yellow Jackets like the Hokies dominated the Hoos all those years.

Very few of the nation’s best rivalries have seen a double-digit winning streak.  Here’s a list of the games, with each team’s longest winning streak.  For those streaks that hit double-digits, I’ve included the years of the streak.  As you’ll see, most of them were a long time ago.  I’ll have comments on some of the rivalries, but not for most of them.
