1) What is Fuente telling 2020 defensive recruits? “Trust me, I’ll get you a good position coach and coordinator”? Tough pitch. – The_Phew

Chris Coleman: Good question.  I speculated that one of the reasons Bud Foster decided to announce his retirement before the season is because he didn’t like being dishonest with recruits.  Last week somebody who knows him told me my hunch was correct.  I expect that Justin Fuente was sort of feeling the same way.  He was tired of answering the question (or not answering it).  So there’s probably some relief from all parties that the decision has been made.

However, now Fuente has to deal with another question: “who is going to replace Foster, and are any of the current assistants going to be retained?”  The only honest answer to both of those questions is “I don’t know.”  I think Fuente has a pretty good idea that Justin Hamilton will be back, but that’s not an absolute promise that he can make.  That’s a conversation that will have to be had with the next defensive coordinator.

So yeah, really the only way to recruit them for the 2020 class is to do exactly what you said, plus I’d probably tell them something like “there’s a reason that guys like Bud Foster, Frank Beamer, Charley Wiles, Mike Gentry, etc. stayed here so long, because it’s a fantastic place to be.”  But that doesn’t change the fact that they don’t know who their next coach will be, what type of scheme Tech will be running, etc.

In other words, there really isn’t much Tech can do about defensive recruiting this year.  They will continue to recruit
