Virginia Tech Camp Update: Projected Depth Chart, Offense

Today and tomorrow we’ll discuss what the Virginia Tech football depth chart could look like right now.  The Hokies won’t release a depth chart until the Monday before the Boston College game, but by this point we’ve heard enough rumblings that we can begin to piece some things together.

As a guide, I’ve used this post from the Subscribers Board, what the players and coaches have been saying, my own eyes and ears, and my own gut feeling.  Today I’ll tackle the offense, and tomorrow we’ll move on to the defense.

Quarterback

Relative to expectations heading into the season, Hendon Hooker has probably had the best camp.  I haven’t found anybody who is willing to say that he isn’t the No. 2 quarterback right now.  He appears to have won that battle based on his knowledge of the system, and the fact that he’s playing a little more consistently.  I don’t think he’s ready to challenge Ryan Willis, but he’s on the right track to challenge for the starting job after another year of development.

Most people probably want to hear about redshirt freshman Quincy Patterson.  Because we’ve been discussing him for so long, I realize that sometimes it seems like he’s older than a redshirt freshman, but that’s exactly what he is.  He’s a very young player who threw about 70 passes as a senior in high school in an unsophisticated offense, and the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago aren’t known for advanced football coaching.
