The offers were slow to come in, but then they came in with a flurry. The last one, from Miami last month, brought the total to 28.

For Cheraw (SC) three-star wide receiver Jalen Coit, it’s about narrowing down that group. There’s already a few standing out, and he already has an idea where he’ll take his official visits this fall.

“At first, it was fun,” Coit said. “You get offers and you’re like, ‘I don’t have to make a decision.’ Now, I’ve got to start looking at schools and breaking it down. It’s still fun. It’s not overwhelming, but it’s crunch time now.”

Coit, Rivals.com’s No. 19 player in South Carolina for 2020, visited Clemson, Duke and East Carolina unofficially this spring. No official visits are set yet, but this fall, he’s looking at possible visits out of a group that includes Virginia Tech, Virginia, Miami, Penn State, Purdue and Louisville.

The Hokies offered in March, and have remained a constant in the race for Coit.

“I’m number one on their board,” he said. “But they just got a receiver decommitted, so now they’ve got two spots open. I love it down there. I think it’s pretty good. I think they’re rebuilding. They’re trying to put it all in the right place. They’ve got (Tre) Turner, (Damon) Hazelton and some big receivers. They just want some speed and space, so that’s good. I think that would work.”

Special teams coordinator James Shibest and assistant coach Jafar Williams have both recruited Coit. To this point, both have made a sizeable impact.

“I think I talk to Coach (Jafar) Williams more,” Coit said. “But they still keep in steady contact. Coach Shibest, he’s my recruiting coach, but I really talk to Coach Williams. It’s gotten better. I think we’re on the same level with each other.”

Virginia has also stayed in the picture, thanks in large part to his relationship with the coaching staff.
