Best ERA in the ACC Era…Still Next-to-Last in Conference Play

I think Virginia Tech pitching coach Ryan Fecteau is one of the best in the country.  What he’s done with Virginia Tech’s pitching staff, which was arguably the worst in P5 baseball when he took over, has been remarkable.  This past season the Hokies posted a team ERA of 3.98, which was the best since the school joined the ACC back during the 2005 season.

That’s impressive.  It’s also an incredible turnaround.  Here is the year-by-year ERA since the Hokies joined the ACC.

2019: 3.98
2018: 5.65
2017: 5.80
2016: 6.49
2015: 5.11
2014: 5.17
2013: 4.14
2012: 4.16
2011: 4.57
2010: 4.76
2009: 5.18
2008: 5.76
2007: 5.85
2006: 6.87
2005: 5.94

Note that the 2013 team didn’t post a team ERA as good as the 2019 team despite being a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and hosting a regional.  Ryan Fecteau inherited a pitching staff that lacked talent, but he’s done a great job of not only coaching guys up, but bringing in new players who are
