New Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach Mike Young announced his support staff hires earlier this week, after announcing his three assistant coaches shortly after he was hired.  I don’t have a lot to say about all of the new hires, but I thought I’d throw in my two cents about some of them.

I’ve said most of what I have to say about the regular assistant coaches who were hired over the summer, but I do want to address a couple of things.

1: I’ve heard fantastic things about Chester Frazier, whom Mike Young hired away from Kansas State.  The Baltimore native has been very productive so far, and I’ve heard that he “eats this recruiting stuff up.”  We’ve always held the belief that his assistant coach hires would play a huge role in Young’s tenure, and thus far it looks like Frazier was a great hire.

2: In-state sources were not high on Christian Webster.  However, in fairness to Webster, he’s done a good job out-of-state with guys like Jalen Cone.  That was a huge get, and Young’s decision to retain Webster played a role.  Also in Webster’s defense, he never made it into Buzz’s inner circle, and with Buzz always knowing that he probably wasn’t going to be here very long, I doubt he ever bothered to tutor Webster very much when it comes to recruiting. That won’t be the case with the current staff. I’m sure Webster will learn plenty from Chester Frazier and fellow assistant Antwon Jackson.  I’m of the opinion that Webster will develop more as a coach on the current staff than the previous staff.
