Alonzo Ford Visits Virginia Tech, Will Camp This Summer

Any guy who is 6-2, 295 might give the impression of a football player, a lineman specifically. You’d be right about that part with Varina (Va.) 2020 defensive tackle Alonzo Ford. What you wouldn’t guess is his familiarity in the water.

During the summer, Ford and his sisters all work as lifeguards at a local pool. It’s an example of Ford’s athleticism, willingness to go outside of the box, and willingness to put others first.

Ford’s football abilities certainly haven’t gone unnoticed. He claims 13 offers, including Boston College, Temple, East Carolina and Old Dominion. But his swimming prowess also gives a glimpse at his personality, even when he’s not in the lifeguard tower.

“When you’re just at the pool, it’s nerve-wracking,” Ford said. “You see a kid run by and you just want to yell, ‘Stop running!’ It’s almost instinct. Sometimes, it gets engrained.”

Despite his current offers, Ford’s recruitment might just be really kicking into gear. This spring, he made only a pair of visits, to Virginia Tech and East Carolina. Most recent was April 13, for the Hokies’ spring game.
