Virginia Tech always liked Dean Ferguson as a football player, but there was never any clear indication of which position he is best suited at the college level. He plays like a safety, but he has the body of a linebacker, and will get even bigger once he hits Ben Hilgart’s strength and conditioning program. However, Bud Foster was his lead recruiter, and Foster eventually saw enough to make a serious push for his commitment, which he got back on August 17.
Though most recruiting sites list Ferguson as a safety, we’re of the understanding that he’s likely to play the backer position in Virginia Tech’s defense. The Hokies have plenty of guys who are suited to play the mike position, but not very many options at backer. That’s why Foster decided to bring in a JUCO (Amare Barno) who could play backer, and recruit Ferguson with an eye for backer as well.
