Originally from Detroit, Oakland (Tenn.) 2020 four-star defensive back De’Arre McDonald has been at his current home for the past seven and a half years. While there’s more than one quality that he likes about his current setup, there’s one he especially wants to keep going at the next level: a family feel.

McDonald, No. 242 in the Rivals250, reports eight offers, most recently from Virginia Tech, Virginia and Tulane. No matter the offer, he said he hopes to find a few specific characteristics, including that feel of belonging.

“I want a school that’s really family-oriented, and it’s a friendly-based school,” McDonald said. “Everybody wants to win, but I don’t want to go to somewhere that isn’t a family mentality, where people stick together. Winning is good, but I’m not going somewhere just to win championships. Anywhere that cares about each other, family-oriented, I’d have no problem being a part of.”

McDonald said he felt a hint of that on Saturday when he and a few teammates visited Virginia Tech. The visit was his first to southwest Virginia.
