It isn’t often that Virginia Tech goes west for recruiting talent. Despite not offering yet, the Hokies have made a connection, however, with St. John Bosco (Calif.) 2020 three-star offensive guard Drake Metcalf. It’s been enough already for him to venture east for a visit.           

Metcalf has three offers, from Oregon, Arizona State and Hawaii. Others showing interest have been Stanford, Notre Dame, Washington, LSU and Ole Miss.           

Metcalf has taken a pair of visits this season that have provided more clarity on a still-expanding recruitment. Being open to schools on the east coast could open it up further, as he also has a time frame in mind on when he’d like to make a decision.           

“I’m really just looking at the environment as a whole, on the athletic side, but academics are very important to me,” Metcalf said. “It’s mostly academics. I have a 4.1 GPA, so I’m trying to see what school fits best academically, as a whole. The family values, on campus, how the team interacts with each other, my parents want to see if it’s a good fit. The coaching staff is also a big part. You have to make sure you click well. All the schools that have offered, we’ve clicked well.”           

This past weekend, Metcalf made his first
