Statistical Rankings, The Quietly Good Season Of Steven Peoples, and a Redshirt Tracker

Today we’re going to look at Virginia Tech’s rankings, the major improvement of Steven Peoples, and give you an update on the redshirt status of the true freshmen.

Tech’s Rankings Aren’t Pretty

Here are Virginia Tech’s S&P+ rankings.

S&P+ Offense: No. 24
S&P+ Defense: No. 91
S&P+ Special Teams: No. 10
S&P+ Overall: No. 55

Those numbers show a special teams unit that has been very good (with the exception of punt returns, of course), an offensive unit that has improved over last season, but a defense that has been a sieve. Overall, the S&P+ rates the Hokies as the No. 55 team in the country.

Now let’s compare that to the other major advanced stats service, the FEI ratings.

FEI Offense: No. 64
FEI Defense: No. 82
FEI Special Teams: No. 32
FEI Overall: No. 41

The FEI doesn’t like Tech’s offense nearly as much, and it also isn’t quite as high on the Hokies’ special teams. I think their
