In the last game of the 2017 season, Norcom (Portsmouth, VA) 2020 defensive end Antwaun Powell tore his labrum. He returned just a few weeks ago, after missing the first four games this season.
Partially because of that, Powell is still just getting noticed. He now has four offers, after Virginia Tech joined on Monday. The injury has pushed back Powell’s recruitment a bit, as he’s still getting acclimated with those who are involved and waiting on more offers to come.
“First, I look at what type of school it is, how good of a school,” he said. “If it’s a good (academic) school I look at the football team, how they carry themselves. The style of defense doesn’t really matter. Some want me to drop back in coverage and rush at the same time, so I don’t have a problem with either.”
This weekend, Powell will take his first visit to Virginia Tech, for the Hokies’ game against Notre Dame. He’s heard plenty, but said he wants to see Blacksburg for himself.
“As of now, when I look at them as a football team, they’re a good school, too,” Powell said. “I’d heard about them, people I know asking, they say it’s a good school and they have a good team. They also told me the coaching was good over there,
“I want to see how the campus is. I want to see if it’s not too busy, stuff like that. I want to see how they play, the defensive alignment, see if I really like it and if I would fit there.”
