Depth Chart Thoughts: Surprise at Whip

Virginia Tech released the official depth chart on Wednesday afternoon, and while we were expecting a surprise or two here and there, there were several big surprises that warrant discussion in a TSL Pass column.

Let’s take it position by position, starting with the offensive depth chart. Click here for an offensive depth chart that will open in a separate tab/window.


There are no surprises at quarterback.

1QB: Josh Jackson (6-1, 215, r-So.)
2QB: Ryan Willis (6-4, 223, r-Jr.) OR Hendon Hooker (6-4, 225, r-Fr.)

I think I wrote a couple of week ago that I wouldn’t be surprised to see an “OR” between Willis and Hooker on the depth chart, and I was right.

Hooker made a lot of progress over the summer and in August camp, but he’s still listed behind Willis on the official depth chart, and generally in an “OR” situation the guy who is listed first is ahead.  The situation is as expected.  The battle for the backup quarterback spot is much closer than the battle for the starting position.  In
