There were a few offers nearing the end of spring for Magnolia West (TX) three-star tight end Simon Gonzalez. Then, over the past month, that number saw a major uptick.
Gonzalez is now up to 22 offers. Just since the first of May, Virginia Tech, Arizona State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Texas Tech, Boise State, New Mexico, UTEP, South Alabama and Utah State offered.
There’s some rush for Gonzalez, but then again, there isn’t. He said he plans to graduate from high school in December and enroll at his college choice in January, which has sped up his decision-making process a bit. Gonzalez has also taken one official visit and has two more planned. Still, he’s thinking through his recruitment and what might be the best fit. He hopes to major in bio-chemistry.
“I used to look for places with a 100,000-seat stadium,” Gonzalez said. “I sat down with my family and we talked about how you only play in front of that crowd six days a year. The other 350-plus days count, too. I used to want huge schools, but that’s not what counts in the end. I’m also looking for strong academic influences from coaches. I know it can be tough when you’re leaving all the nurturing from your parents on your academics. I really just try to filter the academic part first, then I look at football.”
